Phenomenon of Rising Sea Levels in Biak: Traditional Leaders Remind of Risks and Precautions
Biak, Waironnews.com – The phenomenon of rising sea levels accompanied by high waves is reported to pose a potential threat to several villages in the North Biak region and Padaido Islands, as confirmed on Wednesday (18/3/2026).
Information gathered indicates that sea water rose several meters in height and began encroaching into residential areas across multiple locations.
The report was submitted by the Mananwir to the Traditional Leader of Biak (Manfun Kawasa Biak), Apollos Sroyer. In response to the situation, Apollos Sroyer issued an appeal to all residents, along with the Mananwir and customary leaders in Biak Numfor, Supiori, and Padaido, urging them to heighten awareness of possible further impacts.
"To the community, I urge everyone to exercise greater caution when going out to sea or conducting activities at night. This phenomenon can occur unexpectedly at any time, so vigilance must be consistently maintained moving forward," he stated.
He also highlighted the critical role of traditional leaders in delivering education and early warnings to local communities.
"The Mananwir are expected to continue reminding residents to remain sensitive to natural signs and always exercise caution in all their activities," he added.
Concluding his remarks, he called on the entire community to stay united and offer prayers to avert potential disasters.
"May God always protect us all and guide every step we take in carrying out our daily duties and activities," he concluded.
